Founded in 2018, Kofago Dance Ensemble exists at the nexus of African dance traditions and the Black experience in America. Our work as a dance company is focused on healing and ritual through the performing arts.
Since 2018, Kofago Dance Ensemble has created innovative works that draw from West African dance traditions and the West Indian influences of Kevin’s Caribbean heritage. The ensemble prepares their performances with a deep traditional foundation. Their repertory includes traditional dances from West Africa, Caribbean dance forms as well as modern pieces based on West African and Caribbean principles of movement and space.
Our dance work follows the conventions of dance ritual. These rituals, which are historically African dance techniques, have been altered or adjusted by members of African Diaspora. Dance rituals are danced with an intention to heal. The dance constitutes the beginning of a process that can embrace another person into wholeness, health and well-being through song and dance performance.

NAGO is a modern contemporary dance piece by the Kofago Dance Ensemble, choreographed by Robenson Mathurine. Infused with elements of Haitian folkloric dance, this powerful work celebrates the resilience and beauty of Haitian culture. Rooted in the spirit of triumph and liberation, NAGO highlights the dual struggle faced by the enslaved people of Haiti—fighting both physical and spiritual battles to secure their freedom.
Through its intricate choreography, pulsating rhythms, and evocative movements, NAGO honors the legacy of the Haitian Revolution, the first and only successful slave-led uprising that established Haiti as the first free Black republic. This dance serves as a vivid reminder of the strength, unity, and indomitable spirit of a people who refused to remain bound by the chains of oppression. It is a celebration of cultural pride and the enduring fight for justice and equality.
